Microbiome research summit will be held Sept. 6

Josef Neu, MD

Registration is open for the upcoming Microbiome Mini Research Summit on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at UNMC’s Sorrell Center. The summit is a collaboration between the Nebraska Microbiome Research Group and the two areas-of-emphasis groups of the Child Health Research Institute: Genetics, development, exposures and injuries and lifespan diseases.

The event also will highlight local work being done by investigators in the microbiome field and provide opportunities to network. Register here. Audience members are urged to attend in person to best encourage discussions and engagement.

Scheduled speakers and talks are:

  • Jeffrey Salomon, MD, assistant professor in the UNMC Division of Critical Care and UNMC Department of Physiology
“More than a gut feeling – The relationship of the microbiome and intestinal milieu with congenital heart disease”
  • Dalia ElGamal, PhD, assistant professor at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases
“Gut microbiome in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: Emerging evidence & future perspectives”
  • Jacques Izard, PhD, associate professor in the UNMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
“Effect of bovine milk fat globule membrane supplementation to infant formula on the microbiomes, and other systems “

The keynote speaker will be Josef Neu, MD, professor in the University of Florida Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology, and co-director of the UF Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Neu will address “The next epoch in NEC prevention and care: The role of protecting and supporting the microbiome in health and preventative care.”

For people unable to attend Dr. Neu’s presentation in person, a streamed and a recorded version will be available for viewing. If interested in those options, use this form.
