Beginning Monday, July 31, UNMC will no longer require the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of employment or enrollment.
The change aligns with UNMC’s primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, which lifted its COVID vaccine requirement on July 24, as well as UNMC’s peer prominent academic medical centers.
Both organizations continue to recommend and strongly encourage employees and students to be fully vaccinated for both COVID-19 and influenza. This will be particularly important as it relates to the upcoming availability of the new Omicron XBB-specific vaccines.
Employees and students will continue to be asked to document their influenza and COVID-19 vaccination status.
With the change, COVID-19 vaccination is no longer required for jobs currently under consideration or any job postings at this time, said Sarah Gloden Carlson, JD, assistant vice chancellor and director for human resources.
The change follows actions taken in recent months by some clinical partners that provide clinical experiential learning opportunities to UNMC students; however, this may not apply to all clinical sites who may have specific vaccine requirements.
The med center’s vaccine requirement was put in place in June 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to provide updates as the science evolves and/or regional or national transmission rates change. Thank you for all of your leadership and service to our community.
