Scholarships supported by UNMC will allow up to 10 Ukrainian citizens to pursue online certificates and master’s degrees in emergency preparedness at the UNMC College of Public Health.
A cooperative agreement, signed in May by leaders from UNMC and the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, formalizes the university’s pledge to support continued emergency preparedness expertise in Ukraine. The Eastern European nation was invaded by Russian troops in early 2022.
The ministry intends to screen and recommend candidates to seek admission through the UNMC College of Public Health’s regular application process. Those accepted may pursue an online certificate in emergency preparedness or Master of Public Health degree in emergency preparedness as soon as this fall.
Scholarships from UNMC will cover the full online tuition costs for up to 10 Ukrainian health professionals as students through the completion of their certificates or degrees. The university is actively seeking funding for additional scholarships, as well as for a new training course on treatment and response to chemical, biological, radiologic or nuclear warfare.
“We are delighted with the support of Minster (Viktor) Liashko and honored to be granted the opportunity allowed to provide training on the latest public health science, tools and practices to support Ukrainians in improving their health security during their fight for freedom,” said College of Public Health Dean Ali S. Khan, MD, MPH.
Part of an ongoing partnership between UNMC and the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, the emergency preparedness scholarships follow last fall’s campus visit by a delegation of Ukrainian physicians.
