De-Stress Week: Good snacks, good dogs, fitness breaks and more

UNMC students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in UNMC’s De-Stress Week celebration, which runs all next week. De-Stress Week will include free breakfast, pet therapy, fitness classes and more.

The following is a list of De-Stress Week events on the Omaha campus:

Monday, April 28:

  • Bagels and coffee, 8:30 a.m., Durham Research Center commons area — Who says Mondays must be rough? Stop by and grab a free bagel and coffee (for the first 150 people).
  • Butts and Guts, noon, Center for Healthy Living, Room 1004  This mat-based Pilates-style class focuses on low-resistance exercises to build strength and tone your lower body and core muscles. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees will need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.
  • Pups and Popsicles, 12:30 p.m., Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza, green space – Grab a popsicle (for the first 150 attendees) and pet some pups. Volunteers from Paws for Friendship, a local pet therapy organization will be in attendance. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held inside the Sorrell Center, alumni commons, second floor.

Tuesday, April 29:

  • Student snack break, 10 a.m., McGoogan Health Sciences Library, sixth floor by the AskUs desk — Students, fuel your body and mind with delicious, nutritious snacks (while supplies last) and a community puzzle provided by the McGoogan Health Sciences Library staff. The puzzle will stay out the rest of the week on the sixth floor. The library also will provide snacks for students on the Norfolk, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff-Gering campuses. Reach out to the local administration to see when and where they will be distributed.
  • Succulent planting, 11:30 a.m., Durham Research Center commons area — In celebration of Earth Month, attendees can stop by and plant a mini succulent or cactus to take home. Supplies for the first 150 attendees.
  • Yin yoga, 5:15 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 This slower-paced class focuses on holding poses for longer periods, allowing muscles to relax and promoting work on fascia and connective tissues. The result? Improved flexibility and a deeper sense of release. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees will need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.

Wednesday, April 30:

  • Wicked Wednesday, 11:30 a.m., Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza, green space — Which side are you on? Team Elphaba or Team Glinda? Rep your favorite witch by wearing green or pink and join in for a light lunch, enchanting mocktails, an Oz-some photo booth, and test your Wicked knowledge for a chance to win a prize. Food and drinks for the first 150 attendees. *Pink or green attire is not required to participate but is encouraged. In case of inclement weather, this event will take place in the Wigton Heritage Center, Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson Atrium, fourth floor.
  • HITT, 5:15 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1004 – End the day with a high-intensity interval training, or HITT, exercise class. This hour-long class combines strength, endurance and power training to push your heart rate through different performance zones. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees will need to check in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.

Thursday, May 1:

  • May Day baskets, 11:30 a.m., UNMC College of Pharmacy, second floor – Take a break and spread some joy. Stop by and create a colorful May Day basket to give to a friend, family member or colleague. Supplies provided for the first 120 attendees. 
  • Cardio step, 5:30 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 — End the day with this high-energy class that combines Bollywood music with aerobic exercise. Attendees will use a step platform to enhance their cardiovascular endurance and coordination. This free class – a dynamic workout that boosts fitness levels while engaging multiple muscle groups – is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.

Friday, May 2:

  • Cereal station, 7:30 a.m., Sorrell Center, alumni commons, second floor – It’s Fri-yay, and it’s cereal-sly going to be a great morning. Stop by and grab a bowl of cereal (for the first 120 attendees) before heading to work or class.
  • Silent book club, 11:30 a.m., Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza, green space – At silent book club, there’s no assigned reading. All books are welcome – ebooks, audiobooks, textbooks, comic books. It’s a Bring Your Own Book kind of party. Stop by and enjoy a DIY lemonade station and snacks while diving into a favorite book. After 30 minutes, attendees are welcome to chat about what they’re reading or be on their way.

De-Stress Week is sponsored by the UNMC Office of Strategic Communications and the Student Life Involvement and Development Office.
