Nebraskans looking to gain in-demand skills and advance their careers can register for the April 2025 cycle of the Google Career Certificates program, offered through the University of Nebraska’s NU Advance platform.

Open to all Nebraska residents, regardless of their affiliation with the University of Nebraska, the program offers career-focused training for just $20 per course.

The April cycle will accommodate up to 2,500 learners statewide on a first-come, first-served basis. Since its launch in August 2024, the program has seen 1,285 enrollments, providing Nebraskans the opportunity to gain industry-recognized certifications and job-ready skills through just three to six months of flexible, part-time study.

“As Nebraska’s public university, we are committed to accessible, high-quality education that meets the needs of today’s workforce,” said University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, MD. “This partnership with Google provides Nebraskans with a flexible, affordable way to gain in-demand skills and advance their careers — helping to strengthen our workforce and grow our state’s economy.”

Developed and taught by Google experts and vetted by top employers, the Google Career Certificates provide training in growing career fields, with no prior experience required. Available certificates include:

  • Cybersecurity
  • IT support
  • Data analytics
  • Digital marketing and e-commerce
  • Project management
  • User experience (UX) design

For learners with previous experience or those who have completed a foundational Google Career Certificate, advanced credentials are also available:

  • IT automation with Python
  • Advanced data analytics
  • Business intelligence

Additionally, Google is offering two AI-focused learning opportunities: AI Essentials, a module integrated into each Career Certificate, and AI for Educators, designed to help teachers incorporate AI into their classrooms.

NU Advance at the University of Nebraska is making high-quality, professional development opportunities more accessible than ever. The Google Career Certificates program is part of a broader strategy to expand microcredentials and workforce development initiatives statewide, supporting Nebraska’s economy and addressing industry needs.

For current NU students, earning a Google Career Certificate alongside their degree enhances their skillset and makes them more competitive in the job market. A 2023 report from the American Association of Colleges and Universities found that two-thirds of employers prefer to hire graduates with microcredentials for entry-level roles.

For working professionals and career changers, the program provides a fast and affordable way to upskill. Google reports that 75% of certificate earners see a positive career impact — such as a new job, promotion, or higher pay — within six months of completion.

By partnering with Google, the University of Nebraska joins institutions such as the University of Texas System, Rutgers and UCLA in offering industry-recognized credentials that align with workforce needs.

Pre-registration for the April 2025 Google Career Certificates cycle is open now. Seats are limited to 2,500 learners, and demand is expected to be high.
