Kaihlen Schoettmer is a new resident physician with the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.
Medical School: University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine
Why did you choose the medical field? I knew that I wanted a career focused on patient care, as it brings me fulfillment. While pursuing my biology degree, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. During her treatment, we encountered many physicians from various specialties. Each of them played a vital role in helping my mom and our family feel confident in the care she received. This experience motivated me to apply to medical school, with the hope of providing a similar experience to patients and their families.
What made you choose anesthesiology? I chose anesthesia for the blend of intellectual challenges and hands-on procedures. I find it exciting to face the unknowns of each case, and I thrive in collaborative team settings. Most of all, I feel as though I have found my people!
