New resident spotlight: Garrett Dee

Garrett Dee is a new resident physician joining the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology in July 2026.

Medical School: Rocky Vista University

Why did you choose the medical field? My passion for medicine began with watching my father, an internal medicine physician, interact and heal those around me. This passion was further solidified when I experienced a labral tear in my shoulder from gymnastics. With the help of a skilled surgical team and extensive physical therapy, I was able to return to the sport that I loved. From this I experienced first-hand the comfort that the anesthesiologist can bring to those with a potentially life- or career-altering diagnosis.

What made you choose anesthesiology? I was first introduced to anesthesia through my older brother, an anesthesiologist, and after completing a rotation in anesthesia I found myself captivated by the field. I was drawn to the dynamic interplay between pharamcology and physiology, as well as the ability to make immediate, meaningful impacts on patient care. The real-time decision making and hands-on nature of anesthesia solidified my desire to pursue a career in the field.

List three accomplishments you are proud of:

  • I earned All-American on the floor exercise for gymnastics
  • I was awarded 2nd place award in oral presentation category for “Epigenetics Associated with Stress” at Rocky Vista University’s Annual Research Conference.
  • I hiked to several alpine lakes in the Rockies with my wife.

List three things about you that others may not know:

  • I’m an avid fly fisherman.
  • I have three brothers, each involved in different areas of medicine.
  • I love spending time with my family.
