New resident spotlight: Patrick Arnold

Patrick Arnold is a new resident physician with the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.

Medical School: UNMC College of Medicine

Why did you choose the medical field? As long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a physician. Growing up, I had a unique perspective on healthcare as my mother is a physician’s assistant and my father has post-polio syndrome. Attending to the needs of my handicapped father has prepared me for a career of service and medicine is the perfect field to live this out.

What made you choose anesthesiology? I chose anesthesiology because I love the teamwork of the OR. As a former offensive lineman, I identify with the important, yet understated role that the anesthesiologist plays. I also enjoy the unique patient interactions that anesthesia provides as you must earn the patient’s trust moments before they undergo something as stressful as surgery.

List three accomplishments you are proud of:

  • My family, which includes my two beautiful daughters and my incredible wife.
  • Starting on a Division I football team, while graduating with my undergraduate degree in three years.
  • Being able to give back to my community as a volunteer wrestling coach and youth group leader while I was in medical school.

Three things about you that others may not know:

  • My fist snaps as a collegiate center were to NFL MVP, Josh Allen.
  • I love to cook and I am always looking to expand my culinary horizons.
  • I am an avid outdoorsman and love to hike, fish and hunt.
