Message from the Interim Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine

As Interim Chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, I am pleased to offer my first message in the departmental newsletter.

First, I recognize the tremendous contributions of Dr. Deb Romberger to the department and her rich and lasting legacy.  I will do my best to live up to her example and keep the department on level footing and moving forward.

Unfortunately, we live in challenging and unsettling times, with the federal administration transition resulting in chaotic changes that, for many, are associated with disappointment and anxiety.  We are also preparing for budgetary shortfalls in state support and the interjection of politics into our practice.

However, we will maintain our path and hold true to our core values and guiding principles.

  • We will deliver the best care possible to all of our patients regardless of their race, creed or orientation.
  • We will continue to educate and prepare our learners to practice cutting-edge, effective medicine.
  • We will push back against ignorance, make discoveries and expand our knowledge.

We have a great deal to be proud of in the Department of Internal Medicine. Not a day goes by without our receiving a grateful message from a patient well-served, a publication of a noteworthy paper, funding of a grant, receipt of an award, delivery of a presentation at a national meeting, or hearing from a prior student or trainee to express thanks.

Each and every day, our faculty and personnel are making a positive difference in the lives of many.

Keep the faith, carry the light and fight the good fight!
