What's New in AI at UNMC on a promotional graphic

UNMC is rolling out the new Zoom AI Companion features, offering generative AI-produced meeting summaries and other tools designed to enhance productivity and collaboration for faculty and staff. This innovative feature now is available to all UNMC faculty, offering a range of functionalities that promise to streamline various aspects of their work.

This functionality is part of UNMC’s existing licensing contract through 2027, available without additional charges to the institution or units. Once authenticated or logged in, licensed Zoom account users can turn on the AI features within their meeting.

Meeting attendees will need to click the AI Companion button, which will result in a request asking the meeting host to allow participants to use the AI feature.

Note: Meeting hosts with free Basic Zoom accounts are unable to start the Zoom AI Companion feature.

As a health care education institution, UNMC has unique, industry-specific data security and privacy needs. A HIPAA Business Associate Agreement BAA is in place with Zoom, ensuring necessary HIPAA compliance.

Zoom AI Companion offers:

  • Meeting summaries: Automatically generates summaries of meetings, highlighting key points and action items. This feature allows users to quickly review meeting outcomes without needing to take extensive notes, ensuring they stay informed and can focus on the meeting conversations.
  • In-meeting questions: Allows participants to ask questions during meetings without interrupting the flow. When enabled by the host, participants can submit questions, which the AI can address or compile for the host to review.
  • Smart recording: Enhances cloud recordings with highlights, smart chapters and summaries. Meeting hosts can easily navigate through recordings to find specific segments.

To start using the Zoom AI Companion, users are encouraged to log into their Zoom accounts and review their individual settings. While most settings are locked according to IT Security recommendations, some settings are unlocked to allow for individual user preferences.
