A National Day of Mourning has been declared through executive order by President Joe Biden to honor the passing of President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States. Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen, in accordance with the executive order, announced Friday that state public servants will be granted a day of leave on Thursday, Jan. 9, per the Nebraska Revised Statutes 84-1001(3).
Due to these federal and state actions, Jan. 9 will be considered a day of mourning for the University of Nebraska, and eligible employees will be granted declared leave. Declared leave will be prorated based on FTE. Employees must submit the declared leave request in Firefly for Jan. 9.
All scheduled classes across all UNMC locations and online will be canceled. Students involved in clinical rotation should check with their preceptors.
Nebraska Medicine will remain open and operational. Clinic and hospital functions will continue as scheduled. If you have any questions about whether you are required to work on Jan. 9, please contact your supervisor.
Employees who already submitted vacation/floating/banked leave request for Jan. 9:
• Must delete that leave request in Firefly. (The deletion request then needs to be approved by the leave approver – supervisor or other — before the employee completes the next step.)
• Once the deletion of the vacation/floating/banked leave is approved, then employees must submit the declared leave request for Jan. 9 in Firefly (available in drop down leave request).
Employees who have not submitted vacation/floating/banked leave request for Jan. 9:
• Must submit the declared leave for Jan. 9 in Firefly (available in drop down leave request).
Employees required to work on Jan. 9 may submit declared leave in Firefly at a later day.
Employees who are not eligible for holiday pay, including temporary, on-call and student employees, do not receive paid leave for Jan. 9.
