Holiday decor advisory: Decorations must comply with policy

Only electrical holiday lights that have been installed by the decoration’s contractor under the direction and supervision of UNMC Facilities Management and Planning are allowed.

Before decking the halls on campus, read below to brush up on what’s acceptable regarding holiday decorations.

All decorations must comply with UNMC’s Decorative Material Policy. UNMC employees working in a hospital area must comply with the Nebraska Medicine’s Decorative Material Policy EC07.

  • Only electrical holiday lights that have been installed by the decoration’s contractor under the direction and supervision of UNMC Facilities Management and Planning will be allowed. The lighting string must be double insulated or grounded and have an approval rating from either UL or Factory Mutual.
  • Battery-powered lights are permissible if their use complies with the placement criteria outlined in the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine decorative material policies.
  • Natural cut trees, tree branches, pinecones, mistletoes and other natural decorations are not permitted.
  • Artificial trees, wreaths and other seasonal decorations must be fire- and flame-retardant.
  • Decorative materials may not be placed on fire doors, smoke doors, vision panels in any door, light fixtures, electrical equipment, electrical outlets or circuit breaker panels.
  • Decorative materials or other objects shall not be hung from, affixed to or placed in a manner that would obstruct or restrict access, operation or visibility of exits or exit signs, exit corridors, doors, stairs, fire protection equipment or systems.
  • Latex balloons are prohibited.
  • Open flame devices of any type are prohibited.
  • Electrical wax warmers for heating scented fragrance wax are prohibited.

Decorations not meeting these guidelines will be removed and discarded by UNMC safety operations. Decorations must be taken down in a timely manner after the holiday has ended.
