UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, received awards from two community organizations recently.
In two separate ceremonies held in November, Dr. Davies was given the Founders Award from Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands and named a Man of Honor from 100 Black Men of Omaha.
“I am overwhelmed and honored to be recognized by these two organizations, both of which are focused on mentoring and inspiring our young people here in Omaha,” Dr. Davies said.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands’ mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, healthy and caring members of society. They provide after school programs and services to help young people succeed in school, develop leadership skills and maintain healthy lifestyles.
The Boys & Girls Club Founders Award, which Dr. Davies has won once before, is given to a person whose involvement, either financial or through volunteering, provided the pivotal impetus for the institutionalization of the Boys & Girls Clubs movement in the Omaha community. Dr. Davies has served on the board for the past 12 years, including the past six years as board president, stepping down from the role in July. He has previously served on the scholarship and success committee and chaired it for several years.
“Dr. Davies is committed to education and making sure opportunities are offered and accessible to our Club members,” said Richard Webb, president and CEO. “He continues to be a true advocate for the organization, its staff and the young people served by the program. He knows the value of investing in young people, as they are our future.”
100 Black Men of Omaha is part of a nationwide group of leading African American men from a myriad of professions who, through mentorship and education programs, help youth to be respectful, responsible and ready to lead.
The Men of Honor recognition is awarded to those whose personal and professional endeavors align with its mission to empower and uplift young men through culturally sensitive and socially relevant mentorship. The Men of Honor Award celebrates individuals who have made a profound impact on the lives of youth in the community, serving as mentors, role models and advocates for their development.
“Dr. Davies goes above and beyond to make sure that our entire community is a better place for our youth,” said Christopher McCroy, executive director. “In the midst of his demanding schedule, his dedication to service and mentorship remains at the heart of everything he does. From Nigeria to Nebraska, Dr. H. Dele Davies has woven himself into the fabric of this community, not as a visitor but as a vital member, giving generously of his time, expertise and support.
“Dr. Davies received this honor because we recognized that whether he is providing mentorship or medical guidance, he exemplifies the spirit of servant leadership that the Men of Honor award is all about.”
Dr. Davies has long been a strong proponent of mentoring and community engagement, especially for health care professionals.
“There are so many opportunities to serve in the community,” Dr. Davies said. “I’ve continually discovered over the course of my career that when I take the time to embrace and contribute to my community, I get so much more back than what I give.
“Physicians and health care workers have many opportunities to transform lives. But mentorship and guidance to the youth in our community can be particularly impactful and transformative, especially in modeling and motivating them to see themselves as future health care or other professionals and leaders. It is my privilege to be able to serve in these roles and support these two fine organizations that are impacting our community in such a positive way.”
