UNMC students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in UNMC’s De-Stress Week celebration, which runs all next week. De-Stress Week will include free breakfast, a community engagement activity, an aerobics class and more.
The following is a list of De-Stress Week events on the Omaha campus:
Monday, Dec. 9
- Donut Stress, 8 a.m., Durham Research Center commons area — It’s Monday, but “donut stress.” Start the morning with a free donut (for the first 200 people).
- Flannel & Fizz, 2:30 p.m., UNMC College of Pharmacy second floor commons – Wear your favorite flannel or plaid and pop by for some popcorn and holiday mocktails. (Popcorn and beverages for the first 150 people.) *Flannel/plaid attire is not required to participate but is encouraged.
- HITT class, 5:15 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 – End the day with a high-intensity interval training (HITT) exercise class. This hour-long class combines strength, endurance and power training to push participants’ heart rate through different performance zones. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees will need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.
Tuesday, Dec. 10
- Student snack break, 10 a.m., McGoogan Health Sciences Library, sixth floor by the AskUs desk — The McGoogan Health Sciences Library staff will provide healthy snacks for students, so take a quick study break, grab a snack (while supplies last) and help assemble a puzzle. The puzzle will stay out the rest of the week, on the sixth floor.
- TRX class, noon, Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 — TRX stands for total-body resistance exercise. In this class, participants hold on to two straps with their hands or suspend their feet in foot cradles to leverage their body weight against gravity, creating as much or as little resistance as participants want for each exercise. This exercise helps improve strength, stamina, balance, coordination, flexibility and body control. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees will need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.
- Chancellor’s Holiday Tea, 2 p.m., Wigton Heritage Center, Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson Atrium, fourth floor — Stop by for holiday cookies and tea (while supplies last) courtesy of UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD.
Wednesday, Dec. 11
- Cycling Express, 6:45 a.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1004 — Grab a water bottle and get ready for a one-hour group fitness class that offers an intense, low-impact cardiovascular workout on a stationary bike. During the session, attendees will be guided through various terrains and intensities. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.
- Pups and Bagels, 7:45 a.m., Sorrell Center, Alumni Commons, second floor — Puppy snuggles and free bagels. Is there a better way to start the morning? Before starting the day, stop by and take a minute to “paws” and get some comfort from the pups with the local pet therapy group Paws for Friendship and grab a bagel. (Bagels for the first 120 people.)
- Blessing bags, 11:30 a.m., Wigton Heritage Center, Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson Atrium, fourth floor — Stop by and create winter blessing bags for unhoused neighbors. Supplies for bags will be provided. Bags will be donated to Together, a local Omaha nonprofit that focuses on preventing and ending hunger and homelessness. Snacks will be provided to those who complete a blessing bag.
Thursday, Dec. 12
- Coffee station, 8 a.m., Durham Research Center commons area – Start the morning off with a cup of coffee or tea. The station will have a variety of syrups and creamers to add. (Beverages for the first 100 people.)
- Cardio Step class, 5:15 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 — End the day with this high-energy class that combines Bollywood music with aerobic exercise. Attendees will use a step platform to enhance their cardiovascular endurance and coordination. This free class – a dynamic workout that boosts fitness levels while engaging multiple muscle groups – is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required. Attendees need to check-in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.
Friday, Dec. 13
- Pediatric donation drive, 11:30 a.m., UNMC Ice Rink – Give back this holiday season by bringing a donation for the Nebraska Medicine pediatric patient unit. Individuals who provide a new donation valued at $10 or more to the event will receive a winter hat featuring UNMC’s mascot, Ellie (while supplies last). See a list of preferred donations. Cash donations also will be accepted at the event.
- Holiday Skate Day, 11:30 a.m., UNMC Ice Rink — The rink is open – strap on ice skates and celebrate the holidays. There will be a free hot chocolate bar (for the first 120 people).
- Holiday sing-along, 12:30 p.m., UNMC Ice Rink – Warm up your vocals for some holiday caroling with the Nebraska Medical Choir. This group sing-along will be roughly 15 minutes in length. Don’t miss it.
