How I fell in love with my specialty: Plastic surgery is one of the few surgical specialties that operates head to toe and on patients young and old. Almost every procedure we do has both cosmetic and reconstructive implications. There is no greater example of this than a patient with cleft lip and palate. The first time I saw a cleft patient, I was enamored with the immediate and long-term results. The global burden of congenital facial anomalies furthered my interest and ultimately took me on my journey to become a craniofacial plastic surgeon.

Memberships:

  • Alpha Omega Alpha, UNMC Chapter
  • American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association
  • American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Three things people might not know about me:

  • Though I spent most of my medical training in California, I was raised here in Omaha, and I am a third-generation Nebraska physician.
  • I spent three years of my life dedicated to global health care and education, which took me to many remote parts of the world.
  • I have a beautiful family, and my wife and I are about to welcome our third child.

Dr. Nagengast is a great addition to UNMC’s faculty. His cleft palate work around the world was truly life-changing. Better yet, for as good as surgeon as Eric is, he is even a better person.
