Joachim Voss, PhD, associate dean of academic programs for the UNMC College of Nursing, was awarded a Fulbright Foreign Scholarship as a specialist to aid in faculty development, research development and improve health care education at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The award will fund a three-week visit at the university in Jakarta next July, Dr. Voss said. He will conduct a publication workshop for faculty in the health sciences, offer individual writing sessions for manuscript assistance and conduct two seminars. The seminars will touch on how to plan an academic career and symptom management for HIV.
“During that time, I want to meet with leaders and faculty and see what opportunities there are for student exchanges and research projects they’re interested in,” he said. “With that knowledge, I’ll come home and see how we can connect our faculty with them on education, research and faculty development issues.”
Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, commended Dr. Voss on his efforts to secure the award.
“We are excited that Dr. Voss has been selected for this prestigious opportunity,” she said. “It showcases the caliber of faculty in the UNMC College of Nursing. This experience will potentially spur new opportunities for the college.”
As the world’s largest international education exchange program, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
The partnership with the university in Jakarta began when Dr. Voss was an assistant professor of in nursing at the University of Washington. He said Rita Ismail, a then-PhD student from Indonesia who was enrolled at the University of Washington, wanted to work with an adviser who understood stigma against women living with HIV. Dr. Ismail returned to Jakarta but kept in contact with Dr. Voss as the two continued to collaborate on HIV research and worked together to apply for the Fulbright specialist program.
Dr. Voss said while in Jakarta, he will connect with, Dr. Ismail, now the associate dean for academic programs at the university, to advance their next project focused on adherence to antiretroviral treatments in women living with HIV.
Dr. Voss said the Fulbright designation is a high honor that he believes will lead to continued, productive collaboration between UNMC and Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta.
“We are mighty, mighty proud,” he said. “It is such an honor to be selected.”
