Bystander training added to staff new employee orientation

Effective Nov. 1, staff new employee orientation will be held at 8:30 a.m. to noon every second Tuesday of the month and will include bystander intervention training. The training is a one-hour interactive session facilitated via Zoom by Rita Laughlin, Title IX Office education manager, or a designee.

The training is due to the compliance requirement described in Executive Memorandum No. 44 Sexual Misconduct Minimum Training Standard.

Bystanders play a crucial role in preventing sexual misconduct and promoting community safety. Learning outcomes include understanding the bystander effect, understanding the barriers to active intervention and learning how to safely intervene when witnessing unsafe or inappropriate behavior.

The Title IX Office started to facilitate bystander training in spring 2023. To date, 6,273 faculty and staff and 387 students completed this training.

Colleges who would like to incorporate Title IX Bystander Intervention training in their new faculty orientations can contact Laughlin by email.
