UNMC will hold the latest in its Breakthrough Thinking series on Oct. 28 with a presentation by Mary Lou Falcone, an author and advocate for Lewy body dementia awareness.
Falcone will share her personal story to illustrate her journey as a caregiver for her late husband, Nicky Zann, who died from Lewy body dementia in 2020. Her talk is titled “Here’s Looking at You, Lewy!”
It will be held Monday, Oct. 28, from noon-1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. The lecture and Q&A also will be available via Zoom; find the link at the UNMC campus event listing.
Falcone is the author of “I Didn’t See It Coming: Scenes of Love, Loss, and Lewy Body Dementia.” She also is an executive producer of a new documentary film about Lewy body dementia titled “Facing the Wind.”
Later on Oct. 28, the UNMC community is invited to a special screening of the documentary at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater, 1340 Mike Fahey St. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.
The documentary is a love story about people with Lewy body dementia, the spouses who care for them and the remarkable community where they find sustenance and support.
At the evening event, Falcone will introduce the film and moderate a panel discussion and Q&A session afterward. Panelists include:
- Michele Magner, host of the podcast “Inspired Caring.”
- Joan Squires, president of Omaha Performing Arts.
- Julie Pavelka, UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences.
Falcone also will be available to sign her book.
Limited tickets are available for the documentary showing and evening panel discussion. To reserve free tickets to this event, email the UNMC events staff.
