Public health leadership institute graduates 18th scholar class

The Great Plains Leadership Institute scholars

The UNMC College of Public Health’s Great Plains Leadership Institute recently celebrated its 18th cohort’s graduation at Arbor Day Farm’s Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The 27 scholars, who come from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota and Minnesota, successfully completed a rigorous year-long leadership journey.

These scholars — from organizations including governmental public health departments, medical institutions, community health centers, academic institutions and businesses — have dedicated themselves to enhancing the health and well-being of their communities. The cohort included emerging, mid-level and senior leaders, all sharing a common goal: building their leadership capacity to tackle the public health challenges of today and tomorrow.

Over the past year, the Great Plains Leadership Institute cohort engaged in a robust, hands-on curriculum, blending both on-site and distance-based learning experiences. Through mentorship, coaching and collaborative practice projects, scholars strengthened their leadership skills across eight core competencies:

  • Owning your leadership identity
  • Valuing culture and differences
  • Developing others
  • Leading positive change
  • Influencing organizational culture
  • Creating effective partnerships
  • Building political savvy
  • Interpreting complex systems

With guidance from experienced Great Plains Leadership Institute faculty, guest speakers, peer mentors and professionals from across the public health spectrum, scholars were challenged to reflect deeply on their personal and professional growth while acquiring practical leadership skills.

This month, the institute welcomes its 19th cohort of 28 scholars. This group will follow its own leadership journey starting with an upcoming institute event. Since its inception, the Institute has trained more than 375 professionals in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota, and Minnesota who are passionate about the future of public health.

Clinicians, public health professionals and community leaders interested in advancing their leadership skills can consider applying for the Great Plains Leadership Institute. Anyone passionate about making a difference in public health is encouraged to apply for the next cohort when applications open next spring.
