As temperatures turn cooler and the sun sets earlier, it is a good time for the UNMC campus community to be aware of UNMC’s campus safety resources and procedures.

Here is a quick rundown of UNMC’s available services, with contacts and links.

Emergencies, urgent safety concerns, immediate threats

  • Call UNMC’s Omaha campus public safety number at 402-559-5555. Or call 911.
  • “Blue light” phones are found throughout the Omaha campus. These emergency phones have a direct line to public safety dispatch, and a push button gives the user’s exact location.
  • Sign up at this link for UNMC’s emergency notification alert system that operates via text and email alerts.

Non-emergency public safety issues

  • Call 402-559-5111.
  • Faculty, students and staff can report non-emergency concerns on the UNMC Department of Public Safety website with the UNMC Report of Safety Concern form. Users can report non-emergencies anonymously – but the form should not be used for anything requiring an immediate response.

Shuttles, parking lots and car trouble

  • Escorts to parking spots or to the edge of campus are available by calling the non-emergency number at 402-559-5111.
  • People who are working late can move their car into any lot after 5 p.m.
  • Lock all vehicles and leave valuables out of sight.
  • UNMC and Nebraska Medicine operate 14-passenger shuttles from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Two shuttles operate during peak times, and one shuttle is available during non-peak hours.   • UNMC’s public safety patrol offers a motorist assist program for such problems as locked cars or dead batteries. Call the non-emergency public safety number at 402-559-5111. The patrol includes university-employed law enforcement officers and security officers. Security officers wear gray shirts and black pants and drive white security vehicles. Law enforcement officers wear black shirts and black pants and drive black cruisers.

Building safety or anything suspicious

  • Use ID badges to enter buildings and politely insist that others do, too. If you let someone into a building without an ID badge and realize you shouldn’t have, let public safety know.
  • Become familiar with the buildings you frequent. Know the exits, the fire alarm pull stations and the locations of AEDs, Stop the Bleed kits and fire extinguishers.
  • If you encounter a suspicious package, see this list of tips. If necessary, call 911 and contact UNMC Public Safety – report an immediate threat at 402-559-5555.
  • If you believe a person has no legitimate purpose on campus, call public safety at (402) 559-5111 to alert public safety to the individual. Provide a location, description of the person and details of the incident.
