The UNMC Department of Pediatrics added two new division chiefs this summer.

Salaheddin Elrokhsi, MD, became division chief of pediatric endocrinology at UNMC and Children’s Nebraska in July, while Melissa Muff-Luett, MD, became division chief of pediatric nephrology at UNMC and Children’s Nebraska in August.

Dr. Elrokhsi completed his medical education at the University of Tripoli Faculty of Medicine in Tripoli, Libya. He completed his residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center and his fellowship at the University of Arizona/Banner-University Medical Center. Dr. Elrokhsi also obtained his MSc in tropical pediatrics at the University of Liverpool in England. Formerly, Dr. Elrokhsi was a pediatrician at Tripoli Children’s Hospital. He joined Children’s Nebraska’s Endocrinology team in 2017. Dr. Elrokhsi is an associate professor in the UNMC Division of Endocrinology.

During his time at UNMC and Children’s, Dr. Elrokhsi has worked with the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Multidisciplinary Clinic. Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatric Endocrinology, he is a member of the Pediatric Endocrine Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He serves on the Nebraska Newborn Screening Advisory committee and is on the Diabetes Education Advisory Board committee at Children’s Nebraska.

“Dr. Elrokhsi brings abundant knowledge in clinical care, education and clinical research to his new role as division chief,” says Christopher Maloney, MD, PhD, chief of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics Division of Biomedical Informatics and Health Systems Science. “His enthusiasm is contagious, and the team will continue to grow under his leadership. I look forward to watching the growth in all our missions.”

Dr. Muff-Luett completed her medical education at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, as well as her pediatric nephrology fellowship.

She has been as an associate professor of pediatric nephrology at UNMC since 2022 and is the co-chair for the committee for certification for the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. She’s also the medical director of dialysis at Children’s Nebraska.

“I’m pleased to welcome Dr. Muff-Luett into a new role as division chief of pediatric nephrology,” said Kari Simonsen, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics. “She brings significant expertise as a medical director of pediatric dialysis in the development of complex clinical programs, as well as experience as a researcher in nationally networked clinical trials. She’s also a gifted educator of students and residents. I look forward to the opportunities for the division to grow across all mission areas with her leadership.”
