The UNMC Healing Arts Program will host an artist talk and gallery reception with artist Linda Fleming, whose work is featured in the exhibition “Finding: Works by Linda Fleming,” at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center on Tuesday, Oct 8.

The artist talk will be held from 4-5 p.m. in the Gail and Mike Yanney Conference Center on the ground floor of the cancer center. The gallery viewing and a reception will follow in the main dining room.

Born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Fleming displayed an aptitude for art at an early age, and her talents earned her a full scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University in 1963. Fleming is primarily a sculptor, although drawing is an important component of her work. She works in steel, wood, rubber, felt and paper. Her sculpture can be identified by intricate patterns resembling lace, tendrils of smoke or webs. Her practice draws from the desert and mountain environments surrounding her studios in Colorado, Nevada and California.

“Linda will discuss her transformation as an artist, finding her creativity through drawing into three dimensions,” said Colleen Heavican Cass, healing arts curator. “She will share the stories and concepts behind the works in the exhibition, the realities she creates that simultaneously depict the past and the present.”

“Finding: Works by Linda Fleming” is on view at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center during regular visiting hours, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., through Nov. 3. Admission is free.
