To design a successful faculty career in academic medicine, faculty need a plan.

“Promotion & Tenure Essentials,” a UNMC Faculty Development workshop on Nov. 14 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., will help faculty create or edit their plan. Faculty are recommended to participate in this session annually to evaluate and strategize personal progress toward promotion.

Expert guides, Teri Mauch, MD, PhD, and Wally Thoreson, PhD, chair and vice chair of the UNMC College of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Committee, will demystify the promotion process and help faculty identify pathways to reaching their goals.

Promotion and tenure guidelines for the UNMC College of Medicine were updated earlier this year, and a revised promotion and tenure planner reflecting these changes is available on the UNMC Faculty Development website. (Log in with UNMC credentials.) Physical copies will be sent to participants of the Nov. 14 session and will be available in the Faculty Commons (WHM 6044) after Oct. 15.

Dr. Mauch emphasizes the utility of the promotion and tenure planner as a resource for faculty. “It has been immensely helpful to me in reviewing P&T applications,” she said, “and I share it with all faculty members who are seeking promotion/tenure and with all new faculty members so they can use it to plan their careers.”

Though the planner and session experts will feature the college of medicine, the conversation is useful for faculty of all ranks and colleges.

Assembling a portfolio of the impact of clinical, teaching, research and service work can be daunting. A common question is, “Will it be worth it?”

“The simple answer is, as your career continues to evolve and more leadership opportunities emerge, your future self will thank you,” said Linda Love, EdD, director of UNMC Faculty Development.

The Nov. 14 session is a quick and easy way to better understand the promotion process and to get tips for preparing a strong promotion package. Registration for the workshop is available here.
