Maggie Neujahr, manager of care coordination at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, was named Social Worker of the Year by the Nebraska Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Recipients of the award are recognized for transformative efforts, innovative achievements and careers defined by service, integrity, competence and social justice.

Neujahr, who has been in the social work field for nearly 20 years, was surprised by the honor. It was made more special, she said, when she learned that two of her coworkers were behind her nomination for the award.

“It means a lot to see other providers, people I’ve worked with, say, ‘Well received. Well deserved,’” Neujahr said. “Knowing the work I do is appreciated on such a large level is amazing. I truly feel appreciated, and that’s one of the best feelings you can have.”

Neujahr said she wants to see MMI’s Care Coordination Program continue to grow. It’s clear, she said, that the need is there. A recent caregiver appreciation event drew more than 35 families.

Neujahr said her field of work can feel defeating at times, with success not always being apparent.

“This makes me feel good about the work I do. Even little things make big differences,” she said.

Amy Nordness, PhD, MMI associate director, said in an all-staff email that she’s thrilled to see Neujahr honored with the award.

“She works tirelessly for the benefit of our patients,” Dr. Nordness said.
