How I fell in love with my specialty: I shadowed a pediatric surgeon in college and loved it. I thought surgery was the coolest thing in the world. After that, I matched into general surgery and ultimately went into cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery is a very detail-oriented field with fine vascular sewing, which I really enjoy. Cardiac anatomy and heart operations also are beautiful. I like that it is a reconstructive specialty. I also enjoy the critical care and physiology involved in patients’ post-op care.
Three things people may not know about me:
- I enjoy running.
- I like playing board and card games.
- I enjoy spending time with my wife and our 7-pound toy poodle.
Clinic location: Heart and Vascular Center at Durham Outpatient Center

Welcome Dr. Brown!
Welcome! We are excited to have you as part of the team!
Dr. Brown, This is Pat El Tuhami, the wife of Hashim El Tuhami. I want to tell you how thankful I am to you for everything you did for Hashim. You showed him so much respect and kindness. It didn’t end up as we had hoped, but I know that you did everything in your power to save him. UNMC is very fortunate to have you. Thank you again, Pat El Tuhami.
