Motorists who travel Leavenworth Street near campus soon will notice several changes.
Beginning next week, the City of Omaha plans to adjust construction work along Leavenworth Street to the southernmost lanes. On or around Tuesday, Aug. 13, motorists currently traveling on the existing lanes of Leavenworth Street will be moved to the new concrete pavement.
Dates may fluctuate depending on future weather conditions or unforeseen conditions.
One lane of traffic will remain open in both directions as street work continues. Left turns from Leavenworth Street on to Saddle Creek Road will continue to be restricted to maintain traffic movement through the intersection. Access to businesses will be maintained during construction.
Also, this month, UNMC will begin razing several vacant, UNMC-owned properties along Leavenworth Street west of 42nd Street.
Tentative construction dates for the projects are:
- Aug. 5-16 – Raze vacant properties west of Castle Barrett’s
- Aug. 19-26 – Raze vacant properties east of Barrett’s
- Aug. 26-30 – Raze four residences on the south side of Leavenworth Street, west of 42nd Street (Nos. 4207, 4219, 4223 and 4227)
There are no immediate construction plans for the neighborhood lots; once razed, the area will be landscaped – similar to what was done with the UNMC-owned lot at the southwest corner of 42nd and Leavenworth Streets.
