NIH-funded training program is recruiting grad students

Alzheimers research

UNMC’s National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded training program in Alzheimer’s Diseases and Related Dementia Drug Discovery is actively recruiting graduate students to join the project – and to help develop a critical workforce of specialists in neurogenerative diseases focusing on Alzheimer’s and drug development.

Paul Trippier, PhD, co-program director, with Howard Fox, MD, PhD, said T32 funding is available for pre-doctoral students dedicated toward making an impact in these areas. It is an opportunity to conduct hands-on research to identify new targets, new models and new drugs for the potential treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. This is advanced training on top of each student’s respective doctoral training requirements.

“Students will obtain a depth of knowledge within pharmacokinetic studies in experimental therapeutics and the drug development process,” Dr. Trippier said. “This program will improve the students’ abilities to collaborate effectively on interdisciplinary teams with broad expertise to address challenges within target-based drug discovery concerning AD and related dementias.”

Support includes NIH predoctoral stipend, a travel budget and child care costs. Up to seven scholarships are available, with an application deadline of July 28 and start date of Aug. 15.
