New faculty spotlight: Robert (Bobby) Muelleman, MD

Bobby Muelleman, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Robert (Bobby) Muelleman, MD
  • Title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, Department of Anesthesiology, UNMC College of Medicine
  • Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska

How I fell in love with pain medicine: Pain medicine is a unique specialty because the patient population has often suffered for a long time and tried many treatment modalities before being referred to our clinic. To be able to synthesize a patient’s history, exam and other studies to find a solution to ease their chronic suffering and give them an improved quality of life is extremely rewarding. I love it when patients come back to clinic after a procedure or starting a medication and share that they have been able to do things they thought they’d never be able to do again. I also enjoy that it is a procedure-based specialty with constant innovation.

Education:

  • BA, health and humanities, with minor in organizational leadership and management, University of Southern California
  • MD, UNMC

Memberships:

  • American Society of Anesthesiologists
  • American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine
  • Nebraska Society of Anesthesiologists

What are you most looking forward to as you join the department? In short, the people. Having completed all my training at UNMC, I feel confident in saying that the anesthesiology department is full of hardworking, compassionate and brilliant people. I am very proud to be associated with them and look forward to starting my career surrounded by so many wonderful mentors and colleagues.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • My wife and I just welcomed our first child in June.
  • I have participated in the Bike Ride Across Nebraska five times. It is a very unique way to see the entire state, which does not seem as flat when you’re on a bicycle.
  • I scored a touchdown in a high school football game at Rosenblatt Stadium before it was torn down.
