By month’s end, UNMC will raze several vacant university-owned properties on both the northeast and south edges of its Omaha campus.
Surrounded by site fencing, a trio of properties near 39th Street and Dewey Avenue will be razed the week of July 24 to make way for a planned residence hall. Crews earlier identified architectural items within each structure that could be repurposed, reused and/or recycled.
In April, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the program statement for a residence hall at 39th Street and Dewey Avenue to address student housing concerns. Following the regents’ meeting, the community was given an opportunity to bid on and move the structures; no offers were made. Once the properties are razed, crews will prepare the site for future construction.
In late July, UNMC also plans to raze several vacant UNMC-owned storefront properties on the south side of Leavenworth Street on either side of Barrett’s Barleycorn and Castle Barrett. Crews also will raze four UNMC-owned residences on the south side of Leavenworth Street . Once vacated, the area will be landscaped as there are no immediate plans for the lots.
