UNMC professor, local chapter receive physiology society awards

Harold Schultz, PhD, and So-Youn Kim, PhD

A UNMC professor and a local organization chapter received awards from the American Physiology Society during the organization’s annual national conference in Long Beach, California.

Harold Schultz, PhD, received the Extra Mile Award. Dr. Schultz is a professor in the UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology.

The award is given to an APS member who goes above and beyond to serve their chapter. Dr. Schultz has served in various roles on several APS committees and is the founding member of the Midlands Society of Physiological Sciences.

Dr. Schultz said he’s honored to receive the award.

“Our regional society aims to foster advances in physiology-related research, training and public awareness across Nebraska and South Dakota,” he said. “It is great to see that our society has brought together a regional community of faculty, students and fellows to exchange ideas and research results and has developed awareness and collaborations of the excellent physiology research performed in the region.”

So-Youn Kim, PhD, associate professor in the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and past president of the Midlands Society of Physiological Sciences APS chapter, said Dr. Schultz has played an active role in expanding the group’s reach and influence.

“His leadership has helped to grow membership to more than 120, including faculty, postdoctoral trainees, graduate and undergraduates students, and post-baccalaureate students,” Dr. Kim said. “Dr. Schultz has helped to expand the chapter by enhancing student engagement from high schools and university campuses. He also helped to design the chapter website and collaborated with the Frontiers in Physiology Journal.”

Also at the conference, Dr. Kim accepted the Chapter of the Year award on behalf of the Midlands Society of Physiological Sciences.

The award is given to the chapter that best fulfills the APS’ mission of providing excellent service in promoting physiology research, education and outreach.

The chapter has promoted student participation and plays a part in the State Science and Engineering Competition at the Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences.
