Department of Anesthesiology faculty serves as society leaders at national level

Michael Dancer, MD, presents at SCA annual meeting.

Eleven members of the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology attended the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists’ 46th Annual Meeting on April 27-30 in Toronto.

Faculty members represented the department as society leaders, serving as content experts, session moderators and lecturers, in addition to presenting abstracts and complex cardiac cases.

Five cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows had complex case presentations accepted, and UNMC’s Michael Dancer, MD, was chosen to present his case in the Fellow and Resident’s Best in Show. Only six submissions from more than 400 poster presentations at the meeting were selected for this honor.

Cardiothoracic division chief Tara Brakke, MD, serves on the SCA Board of Directors and was the co-director of the fellow/resident program of the Scientific Program Committee.

“These physicians did a tremendous job representing our department on a national stage,” said Tara Brakke, MD. “We truly are advancing the field and inspiring our peers to reach new levels, while gaining education to grow ourselves.”

Dr. Dancer was joined by mentor Megan Chacon, MD, to present “Intraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiographic Identification of Coronary Sinus Atrial Septal Defect during Re-Operative Sternotomy and Aortic Valve Replacement.” at the “Best in Show” event.

Dr. Dancer said he was excited to represent the department, demonstrating some of the work of the anesthesiology department.

“This case was an extremely interesting and rare case, with multiple associated clinical decisions based off our findings,” Dr. Dancer said. “For this reason, it allowed for multiple pertinent teaching points and had excellent echo images to help demonstrate these points.”

“Dr. Dancer did an incredible job with our case submission and his presentation showcased his knowledge and professionalism,” Dr. Chacon said.
