Kelly Caverzagie, MD, associate dean for educational strategy and the learning environment, and associate dean of continuing medical education at the UNMC College of Medicine, and vice president for education at Nebraska Medicine, will become senior associate dean for education at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, effective Monday, July 15.
“I am extremely proud of, and humbled by, the work that we have done at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and the ways we have evolved and remained on the leading edge to produce the health professionals of tomorrow to best serve our state and nation,” Dr. Caverzagie said. “My wife and I have also reached a point where we are looking for our next adventure. The OHSU School of Medicine has been a beacon of innovation and creative thinking in medical and biomedical research education. I am honored by this amazing opportunity to join their team and help lead continued growth at OHSU.”
Dr. Caverzagie is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the UNMC College of Medicine, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. He completed a clinician educator fellowship in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit as an assistant professor and clinician educator before returning to UNMC, where he climbed the ranks to professor by 2019.
Dr. Caverzagie led the development and implementation of the Training the Physicians of Tomorrow Curriculum, UNMC’s first curricular redesign in almost 30 years. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the primary investigator for UNMC’s membership in the American Medical Association ChangeMedEd Consortium. This highly successful multi-institutional collaborative, which was developed to create the medical school of the future, also included OHSU in the founding cohort.
“Dr. Caverzagie is an unrelenting advocate for education and the importance of the clinical learning environment,” said Steven Lisco, MD, chief academic officer for Nebraska Medicine and senior associate dean for clinical affairs of the UNMC College of Medicine. “It has been a pleasure to work with him, and his talents will be missed both at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.”
Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, thanked Dr. Caverzagie “for all he has done in his role for the college of medicine faculty, staff and students, as well as in working with Nebraska Medicine to enhance the learning environment for our students.”
