Services are set for this afternoon (Feb. 16) for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine’s Bhavana Dave, PhD, who died earlier this week following a long illness.
Dr. Dave was a professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. Her husband, Rakesh Singh, PhD, also is a professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology at UNMC.
“Dr. Dave was an outstanding geneticist and a wonderful colleague,” said Brad Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. “We join her family and friends in mourning her loss.”
Dr. Dave served 29 years at Nebraska Medicine’s Warren G. Sanger Human Genetics Laboratory as a clinical and molecular cytogeneticist, educator, researcher and director of the Human Genetics Laboratory, Munroe-Meyer Institute. She recently moved to the department of pathology, microbiology and immunology in the UNMC College of Medicine.
The cremation service will be today, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. at Heafy Hoffman Dworak Cutler, 7805 West Center Road in Omaha. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends donate to the charity of their choice. Med center colleagues also can share their memories of Dr. Dave in the comments section below.
We Miss you, Dr. Dave. Dr. Singh, sending love and peace to you in this hard time.

I was her classmate and a very great friend during her master’s studies in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. An extremely loving and lovable person who was always there for any one of us classmates in times of any kind of need.
I, alongwith all other classmates and friends am devastated by her departure that leaves a huge unfillable void in my life.
May her soul rest in eternal peace. Aum Shanti.🙏🙏
Bhavana has left an unfillable void in my life. I was her classmate when studying for our Master’s in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. She was a very affectionate and kind soul always being there for any one of us in need at any time.
May her soul rest in eternal peace. Aum Shanti.🙏🙏
Om Shanti 🙏
Dr. Dave was a wonderful person and colleague. My thoughts are with her family and friends.
It is a great loss for us at UNMC, and a personal loss for me. Bhavana was a close fried to me and my wife, and I knew her from the very start of her career at UNMC. She had a wonderfully warm and charming personality. I never saw Bhavana without a friendly smile. My sincere condolences to her husband, Dr. Rakesh Singh who is also a dear friend to me, and her family. I pray for her soul to rest in peace.
My deep condolences to Dr. Singh and his family. Dr. Dave was always a delight to see in the hallways. She will be missed by so many.
I’m really speechless. I even don’t have a courage to send a message to Dr. Singh and his father-in-law. When I entered their home the first time, I suddenly felt entering a temple and have no words to express my true feelings for the love with which Bhavna Ma’am cooked and served the food that became a lifetime memory for me. I can simply pray for her pure soul to rest peacefully at the God’s feet. I feel completely helpless for not being able to be there during their grieving. Sending my prayers.
I am very saddened by the news. My deep condolences to Dr Singh and the family.
Gone too early. Cant believe that I just met you in October and had a friendly chat. Will remember our many musical get togethers with you and your parents. My condolences to Rakesh and family. The loss is great.
A fine sweet intelligent woman with intellectual info and yet a loving friend to whom I know since 1991
Dr Rakesh a dedicated husband had a sincere wife and this couple gave so much love to others

Bhavana was always willing to talk, whether it was about the genetic results of a patient or asking about my family. She was generous with beautiful gifts she would bring back from trips to see her extended family. She will be missed.
Sending my deepest condolences to Dr. Singh and family. I will miss her beautiful smile, she was so friendly and caring. Thinking of you all.

We will miss you Dr. Dave! You have always been so helping, day or night, and with a beautiful and warm smile. I learnt a lot while working with you since the time I joined UNMC. May your soul rest in peace. I am so sorry for your loss Dr. Singh.
Rakesh, I am so, so sorry to hear of Bhavana’s passing. She was a gentle soul who will be sadly missed. The Indian food dishes she prepared for the lab made for such joyous events — I will forever cherish those and the items she gifted me from her many trips home. I fondly recall her father dropping by, his big smile, sharing with each of us a yellow mint. Please share my condolences with him as well. Rest east, Dr. Dave.
