The newest members of the UNMC Gold Humanism Honor Society chapter were inducted Jan. 27.
Twenty third-year medical students, seven residents and four members of the faculty were recognized.
The Gold Humanism Honor Society annually recognizes third-year medical students, residents and faculty members who demonstrate exceptional compassion and empathy when caring for patients. The inductees also serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine. GHHS inductees are nominated by peers and faculty followed by a selection committee review.
“The ideals of GHHS remind many of us why we entered a career in medicine,” said UNMC GHHS chapter faculty co-advisor Trek Langenhan, MD. “We are here to provide compassionate and humanistic care, demonstrate respect for all, effectively listen, and remain sensitive to the needs of others.”
The UNMC GHHS chapter was founded in 2015 with support from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and is part of the greater national GHHS organization. The national organization was established in 2002 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which was founded by Drs. Arnold and Sandra Gold at Columbia University. GHHS now has more than 180 chapters in medical schools and residency programs and more than 45,000 members.
Each year, GHHS chapters may induct:
- 15% of the third-year medical student class;
- Six residents selected by medical students and faculty (a tie this year allowed seven resident inductees);
- Four faculty members selected by medical students and faculty;
- One graduating medical student and one faculty awardee of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. The medical student award recipient will be announced later this spring.
“It is such an honor to be inducted into GHHS at any point in training or practice, but it has been a particular privilege to be inducted early on as medical students, so that we can participate in unique opportunities like Sunday Rounds and Writing Club,” said Sarah Sweeney, UNMC medical student class of 2024 and a member of the planning committee for this year’s induction ceremony. “These opportunities reinforce the importance of compassion and humanism as we navigate this pivotal point in our training. The medical student inductees share a special bond with each other, and we have found a new community in GHHS.”
