A retirement reception is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 12, to celebrate the career of Mark Bowen, who served as director of government relations at UNMC for 16 years.

The event will be held from 3-5 p.m. at the Truhlsen Events Center, room 1001A, in the Sorrell Center, and the med center community and friends and colleagues of Bowen are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Remarks are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Bowen joined UNMC in 2007 with three decades of experience in government.

Bowen started his career as a communications specialist for the Lincoln Public Schools, then served in the office of U.S. Sen. Jim Exon as press secretary and state director in both the Washington D.C. and Nebraska offices for 15 years.

He later served as a presidential appointee and state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency and as chief of staff for Lincoln Mayors Don Wesely and Colleen Seng, before joining UNMC.

Bowen has been married to wife Nancy since 1980. They have twin daughters Elizabeth Flowerday and Anne Fischer, who is senior assistant to the chancellor at UNMC.

From Tom O’Connor: Mark never sought the limelight but let me assure you he was a true superstar for UNMC/NM. He had an amazing mind – I swear he was familiar with every one of the more than 10,000 pages of the Affordable Care Act. Best of all, he is just a great guy – a true friend. Congrats on an incredible career, Mark – you truly made a difference.
