Awards, honors and recognitions

Marcia Shade, PhD, has been funded by the American Society for Pain Management Nursing for a year-long research project titled Machine Learning for Conversational Pain Assessment Technology in Older Adults. With this $5,000 award, Dr. Shade will collaborate with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Computing to incorporate and test machine learning models for pain classification and prediction during the ecological momentary assessment of pain in older adults.

Beth Beam, PhD, will be a planning committee member for a workshop on PPE for workplace safety and health. The meeting will discuss reusable textiles for PPE in hospitals to reduce costs, investigate environmental impact and prepare for pandemics.

Windy Alonso, PhD, has been selected to receive the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s 2024 Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award for her scientific contributions that have the potential to enhance the science and practice of nursing.

Lynne Buchanan, PhD, has been elected to the position of vice president of the Nebraska Nurses’ Association Board. She will serve a two-year term from 2024 through 2025.

Sue Schulke, PhD, was named the UNMC Impact in Education Awards Scholar in Education Research. She will be honored with the other awardees at the awards ceremony on Feb. 29 at 4 p.m. at the Durham Research Center I auditorium.

Karla Kerkove, PhD candidate, has been selected to receive the AACN Deborah E. Trautman Future Nurse Leader Scholarship. The award recognizes graduate nursing students who aspire to leadership positions in academic nursing.

Amy Ford, DNP, was named a Silver “U” award winner for February. As a Silver “U” Award recipient, she will receive a Silver “U” Award Certificate, a Silver “U” pin, 1,000 People Are Everything points, and a Silver “U” shirt/sweater/jacket of her choosing. She will also be invited to a special Silver “U” Award Luncheon, hosted by UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD.

Amy Newhouse and Janet Nieveen, PhD, were the Fall 2023 Daisy Award winners.
