Medica Foundation provides support to BHECN’s Project Peace

Riley Machal, MD

The Medica Foundation has awarded BHECN’s Project Peace $100,000 to advance the project’s goal of helping Nebraska primary care providers treat behavioral health conditions.

Project Peace offers behavioral health and primary care providers, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses and others, the opportunity to obtain crucial knowledge from Nebraska behavioral health professionals about managing patients’ behavioral health concerns. Providers can earn free continuing education credits by participating in Project Peace training.

“BHECN recognizes that behavioral health care needs in Nebraska remain at a critical level, and this burden, particularly in rural areas, falls heavily on primary care providers,” said Riley Machal, MD, who oversees Project Peace in her role as BHECN’s assistant director of medical education. “We are incredibly grateful that the Medica Foundation saw the importance of this work and chose to support our efforts, which will benefit many Nebraskans.”

The Medica Foundation is a nonprofit, grant-making foundation that is the charitable giving arm of Medica, a Minnesota-based health insurance company.

BHECN will use the Medica Foundation funding to create new interactive e-modules to help primary care providers and others treat behavioral health conditions. The funding also will enable BHECN to host a workshop for a limited number of primary care providers to get more in-depth knowledge about the topics covered in the e-modules and engage in networking opportunities. The e-modules and the workshop will provide free continuing education credits to eligible participants.

BHECN plans to release the new modules and hold the workshop in 2024.
