Devin Nickol, MD, professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, has been named the co-convenor of the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative.
Dr. Nickol’s term in the AIHC leadership role will run for three years. AIHC is the U.S. societal home for interprofessional education and the membership arm of the National Center for Interprofessional Education and Practice.
“The AIHC plays a crucial role in developing research, teaching and clinical knowledge used every day to provide team-based care across the country,” Dr. Nickol said. “I’m excited to be part of the ongoing process of redesigning AIHC’s organizational structure and to work more closely with all of the wonderful national colleagues I’ve gotten to know through the organization over the years.”
Dr. Nickol’s co-convener, Tina Gunaldo, DPT, PhD, director of Interprofessional Education and Collaobrative Practice at Louisiana State University Health Center, said she was excited to collaborate with him in their new roles.
“We have the unique opportunity to develop a sustainable and transformational structure, which will support the growth of interprofessional education and collaborative practice in the United States,” Dr. Gunaldo said.
UNMC Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dele Davies, MD, said the AIHC would benefit from Dr. Nickol’s leadership.
“As UNMC has moved over the past decade to being pioneers in interprofessional education and practice, Dr. Nickol has been an important leader in that effort. He also has been an important voice nationally in IPE through his continuing service on the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative and as editor of the Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice,” Dr. Davies said. “This new leadership role in AIHC is a natural next step, and I join all of the UNMC community in congratulating him.”
Congratulations, Dr. Nickol! This is exciting for you and UNMC. I appreciate your leadership and guidance as we move forward with next steps in creating opportunities in accelerating the implementation of interprofessional education and practice strategies. Best regards, Missy Ofe Fleck
