New faculty spotlight: Ariane Rung, PhD

Ariane Rung, PhD

Ariane Rung, PhD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Ariane Rung, PhD
  • Hometown: Rockville, Maryland
  • Title and department at UNMC: Vice chair and associate professor, Epidemiology Department, UNMC College of Public Health

Research/professional interests: How the social and built environment affects health, particularly mental health and disaster recovery

How I fell in love with my field: Living through Hurricane Katrina, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and countless other hurricanes in Louisiana allowed me to see firsthand how people are negatively impacted by technological disasters. Over and over again, I saw, too, how social connections and place positively impacted health in this context. Seeing these things made me want to research them and try to make a small contribution to the field.

Education:

  • BA in politics from Brandeis University
  • MPH in international health
  • PhD in behavioral epidemiology from Tulane University

Memberships:

  • Society for Epidemiologic Research
  • American College of Epidemiology

Two things people may not know about me:

  • I spent four years in Cameroon, first with the Peace Corps and then with a non-profit social marketing organization.
  • I love looking at and creating mosaic artwork.
