Jasmine Marcelin, MD, associate professor in the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases, has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award.
Celebrating the local, regional and national contributions of members and leaders in education, research, administration and leadership, the Alliance Awards Program highlights influential faculty and staff in departments of internal medicine at medical schools and teaching hospitals.
Dr. Marcelin serves as the department’s inaugural vice chair for equity and inclusive excellence and is an associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. She said the award speaks to the importance of the work going on at UNMC.
“It says a lot to me that people are seeing the value in seeking out equity and inclusive excellence as the foundation upon which all our activities in health care should be built,” she said. “It gives me hope this work will continue and more people will be drawn into participating and engaging in it.”
“The UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases is very proud of the award that Dr. Jasmine Marcelin recently received from the AAIM for her work in DEI – both locally and nationally,” said Mark Rupp, MD, chief of the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases. “Jasmine is a terrific asset to UNMC, and we are fortunate to have her here. With Dr. Marcelin’s assistance, UNMC ID has put into place principles of valuing diversity and ensuring inclusivity and equity.”
Debra Romberger, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, said the department took pride in Dr. Marcelin’s accomplishment, as well. “This is a wonderful recognition of Dr. Marcelin’s ongoing impactful work in academic medicine around excellence in diversity, inclusion and equity.”
Tammy Wichman, MD, who nominated Dr. Marcelin for the honor, said the award recognized “the impressive work she has done locally and nationally to improve diversity in graduate medical education. She also is a huge asset to our residency program.”
Dr. Marcelin credited Drs. Romberger, Rupp and Wichman for their support of her work. “This award means a lot to me, because of these leaders and colleagues who have played such important roles in championing this work with me. I am also blessed to have unconditional support from my husband, Dr. Alberto Marcelin, and sons, Nathaniel and Giovanni, who are my biggest advocatess.”
“I’d also like to acknowledge how impactful people like Drs. Shirley Delair, Sheritta Strong and Nada Fadul have been in sponsoring and collaborating with me throughout this time. I am especially grateful to our UNMC students, residents and faulty, and community partners like Pastor Portia Cavitt and Mrs. Carolyn Williamson, because none of this work could be done without their initiative, excitement, engagement and collaboration.”
Dr. Marcelin will receive the award during AIMM’s Academic Internal Medicine Week 2024, held April 14-17 in Columbus, Ohio.
