Sias Scherger, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.

Research and professional interests:           

  • Infections in immunocompromised hosts
  • Pathophysiology of infections and sepsis

How I fell in love with infectious diseases: I first became interested in infectious diseases during the microbiology section of my second year of medical school here at UNMC. I developed further interest throughout medical school and residency when working with immunocompromised hosts, such as solid organ transplant recipients, hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients and other patients with inherited or acquired immunodeficiencies. This became my main area of focus during my infectious diseases fellowship and when working as faculty.

  • My favorite country to visit is Morocco, and I once camped for several days in the Sahara Desert.
  • I own a 90-gallon saltwater aquarium with clown fish, Pacific cleaner shrimp and marine snails.
  • My main hobbies are spending time with my children, golfing or other outdoor activities and practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
