The American Society of Anesthesiology’s (ASA) annual meeting draws anesthesiologists from all over the globe, and the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology turned out in force to give presentations, participate in panels, discuss new research and collaborate on leadership.
Faculty, fellows and residents from the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology attended the Oct. 13-16 annual meeting held this year in San Francisco.
“The annual anesthesiology meeting is the biggest meeting in our specialty and connecting with medical students interested in anesthesiology is one of the highlights of the conference,” said Executive Vice Chair Mohanad Shukry, MD, PhD. “Our education leadership and residents did a fantastic job talking to future residents. Very proud of this team and our educational programs.”
Department faculty, fellows, and residents participating in presentations and panels at the event included:

In addition to faculty presentations, the conference is an opportunity for up-and-coming researchers and clinicians to represent UNMC and share their academic accomplishments.
Dr. Goergen, a resident, received a Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Resident Scholar Award for his presentation.
Medical student Nicholas Bohannon presented his research, “Effects of Neuraxial Analgesia on Postoperative Pin Scores in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta” and “Impact of Opioid Crisis on State Legislation and Regulation in the United States.”
Nathaniel Pester, also a medical student at UNMC, presented on outcomes in liver transplant for patients over 65. Pester worked under the mentorship of department faculty Cale Kassel, MD, and Trevor Wilke, MD, to observe the outcomes and adverse effects of liver transplant patients at Nebraska Medicine.
Dr. Bartels was presented with the 2023 James E. Cottrell Presidential Scholar Award during the Celebration of Research at the annual meeting. The award is presented annually to a physician-scientist who has dedicated their early career to research while fulfilling other areas of responsibility related to their roles as faculty and clinicians.
The department was strongly represented in ASA leadership activities, with Robert Lobato, MD, and Cale Kassel, MD, serving as representatives in the ASA’s House of Delegates. Theodore Black, MD, and Gary LaCroix, MD, served as representatives in the Resident House of Delegates.
