Richard Amendola, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.
- Name: Richard Amendola, MD
- Hometown: Iowa City, Iowa
- Current positions: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation; orthopaedics physician, Nebraska Medicine
Professional and medical interests: My practice consists of treating active patients with hip, knee, shoulder and elbow problems. I enjoy treating patients of all ages including younger patients with sports-related injuries or the older weekend warrior. In addition, I see patients for shoulder arthritis and perform shoulder arthroplasty.
How I fell in love with my specialty: My father was an orthopaedic surgeon, so I was introduced to this career path very early. In school, I loved engineering. When I decided to go to medical school, I found that orthopaedics was a great crossover between medicine and engineering with all the mechanics and physics principles that are used. Orthopaedics also is a great fit because the specialty is all about keeping patients moving. Whether you are an Olympic athlete looking to get back to sports at the highest level or a patient with severe arthritis contemplating joint replacement, I love treating these patients and helping them meet their goals.
