The rising sophomores and junior medical scholars who attended UNMC this summer to participate in the Summer Health Education Professions Program had a wonderful experience, UNMC College of Medicine organizers said.
Liliana Bronner, director of medical pathways at the UNMC College of Medicine, praised the program coordinated by Samantha Simet, PhD, associate professor of genetics, cell biology and anatomy.
This year, the college also added to its growing cohort for the Long-term Enhanced Advising and Preparation (LEAP) for Medical School, Bronner said. Bronner and Shirley Delair, MD, associate dean of DEI at the college met one-on-one with all 39 medical scholars who participated in the program.
Twenty-four of these students also met with the college deans of admissions — Wendy Grant, MD, Kimberly Jarzynka, MD, Jasmine Marcelin, MD, and Alan Erickson, MD — for academic advising sessions.
“We also hosted an informational presentation about the LEAP program and its virtual meet-up sessions, which continue to be very popular,” Bronner said. “The virtual meet-ups are hosted each quarter by medical students and college faculty to help scholars build their portfolios for medical school.”
At the beginning of this school year, the college’s DEI team also launched a volunteer organization called REACH (Recruit, Encourage and Advance Careers in Healthcare.)
“We now have students who are part of this campus organization to help us increase our outreach to local schools and students interested in medical careers,” Bronner said. “We look forward to engaging with students and helping them stay on the pathway to medical school.”
