Dorothy Panowicz, budget and fiscal associate in the UNMC Office of Budget and Fiscal Analysis, is the August Gold U Award winner.
“I am incredibly surprised and honored to receive this award,” she said. “It is completely unexpected and seems to come out of the blue.”
Panowicz, who was recognized at the University of Nebraska Board of Regents’ August meeting, continually looks for ways to improve processes and procedures at UNMC, where she has worked the past 34 years. She was a key player in the development of the university’s budget prep system but is especially proud of her work producing UNMC’s annual Planning Information and Quality Indicators Report, an extensive and essential resource full of facts, figures and campus accomplishments from the prior year.
Panowicz’s nominator praised her work on the reports, saying she single-handedly gathers, formats, edits, proofs and finalizes information and data submitted by various subject matter experts. In addition, she researches and crafts specific sections herself.
“What I love most about my job is that every day is different,” Panowicz said. “Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, especially when things don’t work as expected — but it’s wonderful when they work out like they’re supposed to.”
Panowicz said her relationships with individuals across the university system are what have made her time at UNMC so enjoyable. She is a regular team member of the various budget, legislative and policies and procedure groups, and she has worked with individuals from every college and unit on campus, as well as with many from UNMC’s sister campuses, the Office of the University of Nebraska President and the State of Nebraska.
“I’ve enjoyed my years at UNMC, and it’s the people that have made it great,” Panowicz said. “In the end, it’s about helping people rather than helping yourself.” Panowicz said she is nearing retirement but until then, she will continue to improve processes that make life easier for her work family.
