‘I love what I do’: Peggy Moore is Gold U winner

Peggy Moore

From Peggy Moore’s perspective, she has the best job on campus.

As director of e-learning, she gets to work across UNMC in cooperation with its array of health care experts and top-quality students. She teams up with the people who know how to deliver an educational lesson. And she leads a staff with the technical skill to make digital projects happen.

Moore is the people person who pulls them all together.

“UNMC has a great reputation, and I get to work with all these people,” Moore said. “I love what I do.”

This June, Moore is earning acclaim as the winner of UNMC’s Gold U Award. She will be recognized at today’s University of Nebraska Board of Regents meeting.

From the perspective of people who work with her – faculty and program directors from across campus, students to top leadership – Moore is an invaluable leader taking UNMC into the new frontier of digital education.

The nominators who backed Moore offered a long list of positive personality traits they appreciate about her – and draw them to want to work with her and the Office of Interactive E-Learning.

Kind. Empathetic. Selfless. Caring. Compassionate. Encouraging.

Moore combines those qualities with high professional standards and a pursuit of excellence. Her colleagues credit Moore with possessing the talent to direct people’s energy into helping a project succeed, respectfully offering her own perspectives and motivating a team to achieve its goals.

Said Moore, “I’m honored and humbled to win the Gold U and be recognized for work that is always collaborative. I am thankful for a great e-learning team and for the hundreds of faculty who have given e-learning a chance to enhance their teaching.”

Moore credits a number of leaders who laid the foundation of e-learning at UNMC, including: Dele Davies, MD, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs; Howard Liu, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry; Linda Love, EdD, director of the UNMC Office of Faculty Development; Betsy Becker, DPT, PhD, chair of the UNMC Department of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences; Tom Birk, PhD, a retired senior educational designer at UNMC; and Dan Moser, PhD, retired director of academic technologies at UNMC.

In nominating Moore, Dr. Davies said, “Peggy is selfless in her care and compassion for her team, as well as the faculty, students and staff who work with her. She is the consummate bridge builder.”

Nominator Kimberly Michael, the Anderson Distinguished Professor in the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions, said Moore’s kind demeanor builds community.

“I look for projects that include Peggy Moore as a team member,” Michael wrote.

Moore said she believes her effectiveness as a leader stems from relating to other people in a way that brings out the best in them, their groups and the organization as a whole.

“I relate to my teammates, leaders and experts in an authentic, courageous and high-integrity manner,” she said. “I want UNMC and our faculty, students and staff to be successful by focusing on whole system improvement, productivity and seeking input and implementing those recommendations on how to improve.”

To Moore, the credit is humbling. She said she’s still reconciling the individual award with what she sees as a group success in elevating UNMC’s e-learning program, which started as a one-person operation – her.

To date, the program has produced more than 400 interactive e-learning modules. Since 2017, the program’s modules have been viewed more than 280,000 times on the UNMC E-Gallery.

Through the office and in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha, UNMC has developed and now is expanding UBeats, a series of digital modules to teach science and health science to sixth through 12th grade.

Under Moore’s direction, UNMC also recently started a new initiative to offer noncredit and microcredential courses online.

Moore said she originally came into her e-learning role promising to build relationships across UNMC.  “And that’s what I have done,” she said, by networking, building trust and having “a little fun along the way.”

“E-learning is just a modality,” Moore said. “Students, teachers, faculty, staff — what makes it memorable is the people that you encounter.”

People like Peggy Moore.
