Carol Ann Brandt, a longtime administrative associate in the chancellor’s office remembered for her friendship, smile and love of family and hummingbirds, died June 7. She was 71.
Brandt joined UNMC in August 1999 and spent 20 years as an administrative associate in the chancellor’s office before retiring in August 2019. She also spent time as an administrative assistant in the UNMC Department of OB/GYN from 1976-1982 and from 1988-1991.
“Carol Ann was a consummate professional who for 20 years organized my hectic work life in an incredible fashion,” said Bob Bartee, who recently retired as vice chancellor for external affairs. “She was truly dedicated to UNMC, but her first priority in life was very clear – her children, Katie and Adam, and her husband, Ed.
“To me, she was not only a great colleague, but more importantly, a wonderful friend. All of her colleagues and friends at UNMC will agree that UNMC is missing a shining star in our galaxy today.”
A two-time recipient of UNMC’s Silver U Award, Brandt enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, attending musical performances, gardening, meeting friends at wine club and taking leisurely drives with her husband.

“Carol Ann always had a smile on her face,” said Marlene Novotny, executive assistant for the UNMC chancellor. “She enjoyed her work with the UNMC Board of Counselors, elected officials and external stakeholders and was a great resource for these groups.”
Brandt decorated her workspace with family photos and colorful hummingbirds, which she loved. “She was one of the most caring women with whom I have ever worked,” Novotny said. “She spoke with pride and joy about her children, grandchildren and her husband, Ed, and will be remembered for her kindness, attention to detail and commitment to her work at UNMC.”
“Carol Ann was a deeply loyal, compassionate, supportive friend – someone I could count on no matter what,” said Anita Solon, who, for many years, worked alongside Brandt in the chancellor’s office. “She was a wonderful coworker and team player.”
Brandt is survived by her husband, Edward; daughter, Katie (Chris) Wittrig; son, Adam Hart (Matt McMahan); stepchildren, Lora (Dennis) Hofstetter, Matthew (Nicole) Brandt, Adam Brandt; grandchildren and extended family and friends.

Carol was a great colleague. Condolences to her family.
It was always a pleasure dealing with Carol Ann. Despite the stress that can surface in the Chancellor’s Office, CA was always steady as a rock with a perpetual smile on her face. My condolences on the loss of this delightful lady. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Carol Ann was a consummate professional and a joy to work with. She was one of UNMC’s best ambassadors through her work in the Chancellor’s Office and in coordinating the Board of Counselors meetings for years (she always made sure they served the best wine!). Above all, she was cherished by her children, grandchildren, her husband and her many friends. My deepest sympathy to Adam, Katie, Ed, and all who love her.
What can I say other than “ditto” to the comments made already about one of the best and loveable people I had the fortune to bother many, many, many times and she always found time to answer my questions!
Carol Ann was a true gem dedicated to her work and had a great composure in Times of “stress”
A lovely smile that will be missed by many…yet blessed to know her!
