The UNMC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is accepting nominations for UNMC’s prestigious research faculty awards. Nominations will close on July 28.
These awards aim to recognize and honor the remarkable research accomplishments and ongoing contributions of the faculty to UNMC’s research mission.

In prior years, the Distinguished Scientist Awards Ceremony was held in late winter of the year following the nomination period. This year’s timeline for the nomination process has been moved up to allow for the 2023 awards ceremony to occur near the end of the calendar year.
“In addition to celebrating our awardees, the goal will be to create an opportunity for the research community to celebrate the science that led to these awards,” said Ken Bayles, PhD, UNMC’s vice chancellor for research. “We want to create an event that will showcase the wonderful science being done at UNMC.”
Anyone is eligible to submit a nomination on behalf of a faculty member, and self-nominations are accepted. Please submit nominations with a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae through the NuRamp internal competitions application on or before July 28. Select “UNMC Distinguished Scientist and Other Research Awards Nomination 2023” in the available drop-down menu. A process guide for creating a new application in NU Ramp is available on UNMC Guides.
Criteria for eligibility for each award are as follows:
- New Investigator Award: Nominees should be assistant professors or higher and have received their first independent national funding within fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023).
- Distinguished Scientist Award: Nominees should have at least one year of service at UNMC, hold the position of associate professor or above and have a track record of securing extramural funding at UNMC.
- Research Leadership Award: This accolade is reserved for previous recipients of the Distinguished Scientist Award with a continued record of consistent national funding and demonstrated research leadership at UNMC.
- Scientist Laureate Award: As UNMC’s highest research honor, nominees must meet all criteria for Distinguished Scientists and have a minimum of five years of service at UNMC prior to the award year.
Final candidates will be selected based upon volume and impact of publications, research funding and evidence of research collaboration with colleagues. Honorees will be announced as part of UNMC’s Distinguished Scientist Awards Ceremony in fall 2023.
