NU open education events set for this week

The NU Open Educational Resources Community of Practice is hosting several virtual events from April 25-27 to highlight open education efforts. All instructors are invited to these Zoom webinars to learn more. 

Focused on promoting initiatives to lower the cost of course materials for students, the Open Educational Resources Community of Practice includes ITS team members, instructional designers, librarians and registrars from all four University of Nebraska campuses.

  • NU OER Research Highlights – Tuesday, April 25, noon-1 p.m. 
    Dan Hawkins, PhD, director of online development and professor of sociology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Julie Pelton, PhD, associate professor and chair of the UNO Department of Sociology and Anthropology, will present research on the use of no-cost and low-cost materials that are part of Open Nebraska. They will present preliminary results that compare grades earned and retention rates in Open Nebraska courses to courses that use traditional materials across three NU campuses.   • Student Voices – Wednesday, April 26, noon-1 p.m.
    A panel of students from each NU Campus will discuss their experiences with affordable textbooks. Use this link to join the webinar.
  • OER Curriculum Pathways – April 27, noon-1 p.m.
    Two UNO faculty will discuss work on creating OER curriculum pathways. Craig Finlay, open education resources and STEM librarian, will discuss a team-based initiative to target high-enrollment general education and dual enrollment courses toward building an OER general education pathway. Dr. Hawkins will discuss the implementation of an OER degree pathway in the UNO Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Use this link to join the webinar.
