A new UNMC student group, the Student National Medical Association, will hold its first meeting on April 18 at 5 p.m. in the Linder Reading Room in UNMC’s Sorrell Center.
“SNMA is a medical-student run national organization with the mission of supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians,” said Ryan Boyland, fourth-year UNMC medical student and the organization’s interim president.
The new group will hold events such as regular meetings, mixers with Creighton medical students, outreach events to students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska at Omaha and trips to national conferences, where, Boyland said, “members will have chances to present research and connect with a nationwide network of physician mentors.”
UNMC had an SNMA chapter more than a decade ago, said Shirley Delair, MD, associate dean of DEI in the college of medicine. Dr. Delair said she was pleased to see the organization revived on campus.
Interested medical students can RSVP for the meeting here. Students with questions can contact Boyland.
